Andrea Goldsmith has published five novels, the most recent being The Prosperous Thief, short-listed for the 2003 Miles Franklin award. The novel spans the twentieth century, opening in 1912 Berlin and moving across time and through three continents to contemporary Australia. It is a moral thriller where revenge, forgiveness and the seductions of forgetting all play a role. Filtering through the book is the long dark shadow of the Holocaust. The novel explores how people live when saddled with a terrible legacy, how memory can be used not simply to memorialise the past but to consolidate, reinforce and even justify present needs and desires.
