Gault Millau was founded by two French journalists, Henri Gault and Christian Millau, who first published a guide in France in 1969. The first German edition was published in 1983 and the first "WeinGuide" in 1995. The purpose of this Gault Millau guide is to rate wines using icons and symbols combined with useful and descriptive text. Armin Diel was born in the Nahe region where he took over the Burg Layen wine estate from his father in 1987. He is also head of the Deutsches Barrique Forum and is in charge of the Nahe region for the VDP. Joel Payne was born in Kansas, USA. He worked for the United Nations before becoming a sommellier in the 1980s - he was voted best sommellier in Germany for French and German wines. In 1990 he moved to work in the wine trade. Diel and Payne also work together on the German business magazine Capital as well as well as the wine publication Alles uber Wein (All About Wine).
