Following 10 years in teaching, Dennis moved into education management - subsequently holding a number of senior positions. After leaving local government, he undertook a range of consultancy, interim management and administrative-based work in education and children's services, while increasingly concentrating on his interest in military history. This is reflected in both his research and his writing - and as a specialist subject for his second-hand book business. The remainder of his working time is spent in support of his wife's vintage and design business, and carrying out the role of an independent chair for the NHS' continuing healthcare services. In 2003, Dennis was awarded an MA in Military History at the University of Leeds - following which he undertook further research under the auspices of the Centre for First World War Studies (University of Birmingham). His researches led to him contributing a chapter for a recent book on the British Army during the final period of the First World War. An enthusiastic player of wargames, he has written a rulebook for 19th century warfare in Europe.
