Gwendolyn MacEwen was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1941. She twice received the Governor General's Award for Poetry, for The Shadow Maker in 1967, and posthumously for Afterworlds (1987). She also wrote plays, including translations, poetry, short stories and two novels.
