Rutger Kopland is the pseudonym of Professor R. H. van den Hoofdakker (b. 1934), a distinguished neurologist at Groningen University. He has been publishing volumes of poetry since 1966 and is one of Holland's most respected and widely-read poets. His ninth collection appeared in 1989, the year in which he received his country's highest award for literary achievement, the P.C. Hooft Prize.James Brockway, who has lived in Holland since 1946, has for many years been active in promoting contemporary British authors through his articles in the Dutch press. His translations of Dutch poetry and prose have appeared in numerous English magazines, and this work was recognised in 1966 with the award of the Martinus Nijhoff Prize. His books include two collections of essays and The Prospect and the River, a short selection of his Kopland translations.
