Tom Pickard was born in Newcastle in 1946, left school at 14, and set up Morden Tower poetry readings with Connie Pickard in 1964. Since 1975 he has lived and worked in Warsaw, America, London and the North as a freelance writer and film-maker. His first two poetry books, High on the Walls (1967) and The Order of Chance (1971), were published by Fulcrum Press, and his autobiographical novel Guttersnipe (1971) by City Lights in San Francisco. Allison & Busby published three of his books: Hero Dust (1979), an earlier New & Selected Poems; his history Jarrow March (co-written with his wife, Polish photographer Joanna Voit); and his last collection, Custom & Exile (1985). We Make Ships, his portrait of shipbuilding on Wearside, was published by Secker in 1989.
