Antony Wynn read Persian and Turkish at Balliol College, Oxford, studying Persian literature and spent a year in Shiraz University in Iran. In the 1970s he worked in Iran as a resident carpet buyer, travelling widely over much of the country covered by Sykes. He still goes there regularly and is a friend of some of the descendants of those who worked with Sykes, or fought against him. He lives in London and Kent.
