Zhang Xianling, born in 1936, is the author of the internationally acclaimed Half of Man is Woman and Getting Used to Dying. In 1993 he set up a trading company in Ningxia to assist the local community in developing a market economy. He is vastly encourgaed that floppy disks are now being manufactured near open spaces where he spent years tending the labour camp's livestock. Martha Avery translates for Zhang Xianling.
