The son of survivors of the Algerian war of independence, Khalil Bendib was born in Paris during the Algerian revolution and grew up in Morocco and Algeria before moving to California at the age of 20. In 1995 Khalil weaned himself from a steady pay cheque by resigning in disgust from a Californian local paper over increasing censorship of his work. He has two books to his credit: It Became Necessary to Destroy the Planet in Order to Save It was published in 2003. His cartoons have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, USA Today, the San Francisco Chronicle and others, either as part of feature stories written about him or as part of full-page ads purchased by various advocacy groups.
