Ronald Broughton qualified as a doctor at Manchester University, was a surgeon in the RAF in the occupations forces in Japan and later a general practitioner in Salford. Furniture-maker, wood-carver and turner and painter with several exhibitions to his credit, he has been fascinated by entomology ever since he observed that Dytiscus beetles and tadpoles do not live happily together in the same jar. He is a keen fisherman, a respected fly tyer and an authority on grayling and fishing worldwide. A founder member and first chairman, and now president, of the Grayling Society, he is a member of three major consultative committees, trustee and founder member of two river trusts, founder member and one-time chairman of the Institute of Fisheries Management North-West branch, chairman of the Lancashire branch of the Lancashire Fly Fishers' Association and a member of the Flyfishers' Club. He has contributed drawings and chapters on grayling to other authors' books.
