Val Hennessy has been a writer for over half a century. Best known for her work as chief literary critic for the Daily Mail from 1989 to 2004, she commenced her career on Goldsmiths College's legendary student newspaper Smith News, progressing to the Brighton Voice and Peace News. She became a Fleet Street freelance journalist, an associate editor of Time Out and a columnist for Saga Magazine, and continues to write for the Daily Mail 's 'Retro Reads' column. Throughout her career, she has also written for the Guardian, the Observer, New Society, You Magazine, Spare Rib, City Limits, and the London Evening Standard. Described by Auberon Waugh as 'a handsome if elderly and inescapably middle-class journalist' she has been a judge for the Whitbread Book Awards and was a member of the inaugural panel judging the very first Orange Prize. She is an authority on Women's Literature, lives in Whitstable, and has four grandchildren.
