JACOB KATZ is Emeritus Professor of Jewish Educational and Social History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He has published widely in the United States, Israel, and Germany. His most recent books in English are Emancipation and Assimilation: Studies in Modern Jewish History (1972), Out of the Ghetto (1973), and From Prejudice to Destruction, 1700-1933 (1980).
