James L. Newman, Ph.D., is a professor of geography at Syracuse University's Maxwell School. He has consulted for the National Geographic Society Atlas, the Encyclopedia of Cultures and Everyday Life, and the Columbia Encyclopedia, and served on the editorial board of the Cambridge History and Culture of Human Nutrition. His previous books include The Peopling of Africa, Eliminating Hunger in Africa with Daniel Griffith, Contemporary Africa with C. Gregory Knight, and The Ecological Basis for Subsistence Change Among the Sandawe of Tanzania. He lives in Syracuse, New York.
