Books by Victor Segalen

Victor Segalen was born in Brest in 1878. A naval doctor who hated the sea, he died mysteriously at the age of forty-one. A traveller, and one of the principal founders of the French school of Chinese Archaeology, Segalen's life was an extraordinary odyssey that took him from Brittany to Tahiti in search of Gaugin, and on to a Chinese emperor by way of Debussy and Claudel. Despite his frail pyschological health, his two epic hourneys through China prompted him to write Steles.
