The subject of war, peace and social change - an essential one in the study of 20th-century European history - gives rise to many debates. These can be followed in the writings of historians but they should also be studied from the primary sources. In all their variety primary sources bring one directly into contact with the real texture of history. Reproduced here is a collection of extracts from diaries, social surveys, acts of parliament, international treaties, novels and poems, newspaper reports, and texts taken from many different countries. Together with its companion volume, "Documents 1929-1959", the collection is designed to accompany the Open University course, A318 War, Peace and Social Change; Europe 1900-1955. It will prove useful to anyone interested in 20th-century Europan history and especially to anyone with a particular interest in social history.
