Trauma is the single most common cause of death for individuals under the age of 40, and the third most common cause of death for people of all ages. It is generally accepted that prompt and appropriate care of traumatized patients can save large numbers of lives. It is a disturbing fact that often the patients in most need of this complex treatment are treated by the most junior and inexperienced members of staff. This is the first in a series of handbooks on accident and emergency medicine. It reflects the growing interest and concern about trauma care and the important role of accident and emergency specialists in the early care of their patients.
