Leonard Michaels grew up in Manhattan, lived in Michigan for several years, then moved to California, where he is now Professor of English at the University of California at Berkely. He is the co-author, with Christopher Ricks, of The State of Language, a two-volume anthology published in 1980 and 1990. He is the author of Going Places, I Would Have Saved Them If I Could, which was named one of the six outstanding works of fiction of 1975 by the New York Times Book Review, and The Men's Club (nominated for the Natonal Book Critics Circle Award).
