B 'Banjo' Paterson was born at Narrambla, NSW in 1864. He was educated in Sydney and practised law until 1900, when he found success as a writer, contributing ballads to the Sydney BULLETIN. He worked as a correspondent for the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD for a time, then sold his poetry rights and bought a property near the upper Murrumbidgee River. He went to Europe during WWI, working as a war correspondent. After the war he remained in journalism, continuing to write poetry as well. Among his best known collections are THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVER, RIO GRANDE'S LAST RACE AND OTHER VERSES, THE ANIMALS NOAH FORGOT and a work of fiction, THE SHEARER'S COLT. He died in 1941.
