The late Bertold Spuler (l911-1990), University of Hamburg, was one of the world's leading experts on Mongol and Muslim history. His numerous books have been translated into many languages. Arthur N. Waldron, United States War Naval College and Brown University, author of The Great Wall of China: From History to Myth and several other books, has provided an introduction to this edition, discussing the contribution to world history of the Mongols and other nomad societies.
