An arts graduate of the University of Leicester, Dale Idiens became Assistant Keeper in charge of the ethnographic collections of the Royal Scottish Museums (now the National Museum of Scotland) in 1964. These collections include a large Polynesian section with important Cook Islands material. As part of a project to develop the Cook Islands collection Dale Idiens visited Rarotonga in 1982 in order to commission replicas of traditional artefacts. Since 1983 she has been Keeper of the Department of History and Applied Art in the National Museums of Scotland. She has wide interests in Pacific art, African textiles and North American Indian art and has published in all these fields.
