Derek M Yellon, PhD, BSc, Hon. FRCP, FACC, FESC is Professor of Cellular Cardiology at University College London (UCL) and holds the position of Director of the Hatter Institute and Head of Division of Cardiology at UCL Hospitals and Medical School. His many publications include Myocardial protection, The pathophysiology of reperfusion and Reperfusion injury. His major personal research interest is in myocardial protection, especially the signal systems involved in preconditioning and in reperfusion-induced injury. Lionel H Opie, MD, DPhil, DSc, FRCP is Director of the Cape Heart Centre and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cape Town. The 4th edition his single author book, The Heart, Physiology, from cell to circulation, now entitled Heart Physiology, is currently in preparation. His book, Drugs for the heart, 2001, is in its fifth edition. His major research interest lies in the metabolic approach to myocardial ischemia and infarction.
