Eva Maria Knabenbauer was born in Aschersleben, later situated within the GDR, in 1940. As a young adult she was refused university study due to her political beliefs and family background. She left Aschersleben in 1960 to live, study and work in the UK. The fall of the Berlin Wall made it possible for her to visit her former home.
