SIR JAMES CABLE was twice involved with Indochina: as a Member of the British Delegation to the Geneva Conference in 1954 and as Head of the South East Asia Department of the Foreign Office from 1963 to 1966. Since he retired from the Diplomatic Service as Ambassador to Finland in 1980 he has been a freelance writer and lecturer on international relations and naval affairs. His 13th book, The Political Influence of Naval Force in History, was published in 1998. He has also been a contributor to other books and TV programmes about Indochina.
