Jane Cooper (1924-2007) joined the faculty of Sarah Lawrence College in 1950, and remained as a teacher and poet in residence until her retirement in 1987. She held the post of New York State Poet from 1995 to 1997. Her first collection, The Weather of Six Mornings, received the Lamont Award of the Academy of American Poets in 1968. In 1978 she shared the prestigious Shelley Memorial Award of the Poetry Society of America. Her Selected Poems, Scaffolding, published by Anvil Press in Britain in 1984, won the Maurice English Poetry Award, and was followed by Green Notebook, Winter Road from Bloodaxe in 1995, a finalist for the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize in the US. Flashboat: Poems Collected and Reclaimed was published by Norton in 1999.
