The Author was born at Kelsick Grammar School House, Ambleside on 5th January 1939 and lived there until aged 17. He attended St Mary's Junior School, Ambleside and Kelsick Grammar School where his Father was Headmaster between 1936 - 1965 and his Mother taught History and English. After being awarded County Major and State Scholarships, he gained an Honours Degree in Geography at St Edmund Hall, Oxford, 1957 - 1960, followed by an external Honours degree in History from the University of London. The years 1961 - 89 were spent in teaching Geography at Pudsey G.S., Hull G.S., Edward Shelley H.S., Walsall, Wednesfield G.S., Wolverhampton and finally at Sheldon Heath Comprehensive, Birmingham. From 1985 - 2001 he was Editor and Publisher of the Railway Collectors' Journal, the first national Journal of Railwayana History and founded the first telephone auction called Birmingham Railwayana Auctions. He has three sons, Julian, Justin and Dr Jason Mander, Assistant Dean of Worcester College, Oxford. The Author has recently returned to his native area and lives at Howgill near Sedburgh; he stood for Parliament in 2005 and 2010 for the UK Independence Party.
