Cry Downriver is John Pepper's seventh book. His Cockley Beck: A Celebration of Lakeland in Winter has been listed in the Guardian as one of 'the great classics of British nature writing'. Other titles include The Good God Guide and How To Be Happy. He is also a practising counsellor and psychotherapist, a cartoonist, and was once a television journalist, BBC World Service sub-editor and contributing feature writer for the Guardian and New Statesman. He lives in Lancaster.
