Margaret Simey, Doctor of Letters, spent most of her working life as a representative and a champion of the people of Liverpool. She was the first female graduate in social science at Liverpool University in 1928, where she was taught and influenced by Eleanor Rathbone. She followed a political career as a local and county councillor in Liverpool and was chair of the police committee at the time of the Toxteth riots in 1981. Margaret Simey died in July 2004 aged 98.
