Dr Martin Howard, a hospital consultant and Fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians and Pathologists, has a longstanding interest in the Napoleonic Wars and has lectured and written extensively on the subject. He has a particular interest in the human dimension of the wars and the British army's less-well-known campaigns. He is the author of Wellington's Doctors: The British Army Medical Services in the Napoleonic Wars (2002), Napoleon's Doctors: The Medical Services of the Grande Armee (2006), Napoleon's Poisoned Chalice: The Emperor and his Doctors on St Helena (2009), and Walcheren 1809: The Scandalous Destruction of a British Army (2012). He lives in York with his wife Mary and sons Alex and Nicholas.
