Roger Wilson trained as a TV producer and journalist, working in the BBC and as a freelance before becoming involved in new technology interactive media as an adviser and consultant. He was diagnosed with a rare cancer in 1999. He rapidly became involved in cancer research and as a patient representative in the NHS. He chaired the national cancer research patient group and built strong European and international links with other patient organisations. Roger was also concerned about the treatment of his own rare cancer, a sarcoma, and this led to founding Sarcoma UK, now a national UK charity. He was involved in the re-structuring of NHS services for sarcoma and in the NICE appraisal of new drugs. He chaired a national programme on chronic disease prevention and worked on a research programme in palliative care. In 2008 he was involved in the development of new approaches for the NHS in supporting cancer survivors. He has had several recurrences of his cancer and treatment has involved surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. He had an amputation in 2007 and bilateral lung surgery in 2013.He was awarded the CBE in 2011 for services to healthcare and has also received honorary degrees from the Universities of Sheffield and Lancaster.Roger is happily married and has three daughters and four grandsons. He is an elder in his local United Reform Church, which adopts a liberal religious approach.
