Stewart Parker was born in Belfast in 1946. He attended Queens University and, in 1961, lost his leg to bone cancer. In 1964, he moved to the United States, where he spent the next five years teaching at Hamilton College and Cornell University. He returned to Belfast in 1969, where he became known for his journalism, writing the first pop music column for the Irish Times from 1970 to 1976. After the success of his radio play The Iceberg, he wrote seven full length plays, as well as many television screenplays and radio plays, winning awards in all three areas. Parker died in November 1988, aged 47.
