The Physics of Vibrations and Waves by Hj Pain
Focused on the transmission of energy by wave propagation, in particular electromagnetism, acoustics and optics, this text includes information on matrix applications to coupled oscillations, optical systems and multi-layer dielectric films. Chapters have been added and include "Simple Harmonic Motion", and "Non-linear Waves, Shocks and Solitons". There are also sections on electromagnetic waves in the ionosphere and other plasmas, the laser cavity, and optical wave guides. This edition contains increased discussion of solitons, such as their role in optical transmission lines, collisionless shocks in space, non-periodic lattices, and their connection with Schrodinger's equation. It also provides readers with a large number of problems, along with hints on how to solve them.
H. J. Pain is a graduate of the united states Naval Aviation Academy, Florida, and of the Universities of St Andrews, London and Aix Marseilles. He taught physics at Imperial College, London where his research interests were in shock waves and magnetohydrodynamics.
