The Tate Gallery, keeper of the nation's premier collection of British and 20th-century art, owns over 1000 works of art by women, representing some 228 artists. In celebration of this rarely seen group of paintings, sculptures and drawings, 20 women writers were invited to select and write about their favourite piece owned by the Tate. The result is this anthology which mirrors and marries women's creativity and imagination in two cultural forms. The writers include Beryl Bainbridge, Elspeth Barker, Pat Barker, Clare Boylan, Katie Campell, Maureen Duffy, elaine Feinstein, Eva Figes, Margaret forster, Jane Gardam, Maggie Gee, Penelope Lively, Shen Mackay, Jane Rogers and Joan Smith. The artists include Mary Beale, Vanessa Bell, Lady Butler, Sheila Fell, Elizabeth Frink, Barbara Hepworth, Beatrice How, Ghisha Konig, Mary Potter, Paula Rego and Vieira da Silva.
