Waiting for the Night-rowers Summary

Waiting for the Night-rowers by Roger Moulson

This work is shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Prize 2006. Roger Moulson's debut collection, a "Poetry Book Society Recommendation", heralds the arrival of a refreshingly original voice in contemporary poetry. Dressed in simple language, the poems travel to a range of times and places to look for the power in all things and, beyond, to the loss of that power. In the landscapes that Moulson imagines or revisits, rivers, seas, stones, urban detritus and people seem filled with longing. Their voices alternate between dogmatic statement, restraint and song. At times, this leads to masterfully controlled slapstick, at others to breathtaking lyricism.

Waiting for the Night-rowers Reviews

'Roger Moulson's Waiting for the Night Rowers is a substantial and exciting collection, a mature distillation of a varied life experience. Admirably attentive to the world and to their own inner impulses, these are authentic and most satisfying poems. The real thing, we all thought.' Michael Laskey, Chairman Jerwood Aldeburgh Poetry Prize 2006 '...five excellent collections made it on to the short-list. Roger Moulson was the uncontested favourite of all the judges. His humanity, range and technical accomplishment make Waiting for the Night Rowers a very worthy winner of this year's prize' Carole Satyamurti, judge Jerwood Aldeburgh Poetry Prize 2006 'Here is a striking new voice...He is always lyrical, and often disturbing.' - Elaine Feinstein 'Roger Moulson's poetry is rock solid in language and technique but uses its skills to throw an unexpected light on the world of everyday. Original is a word often employed and frequently misapplied. Here, it is fully deserved: in Moulson's poetry the usual turns into the extraordinary and the apprehensive into the exultant.' - Peter Porter
