Student's Guide to Structural Design Summary

Student's Guide to Structural Design by S.A. Lavan

This replaces the well-known third edition of Morgan's "Students Structural Handbook" and presents a step-by-step guide to the basic procedures of design of the most commonly used structural elements, including beams, slabs and columns, as well as retaining walls. It has been written in terms of limit state design, and deals with the use of reinforced and prestressed concrete, structural steelwork and structural timber (all of which have been the subject of recent major revisions to BSI design codes) plus load-bearing brickwork and blockwork. The book is aimed at all BTEC HC level III, IV, V students of structural design, undergraduate students of architecture and building, and first and second year undergraduate students of civil and structural engineering. It should also be an invaluable reference for practising engineers, architects and technicians.

Table of Contents

Part 1 General: SI units; definitions; loading; bending moments, shear force, deflections and shear properties; British standards and codes of practice. Part 2 Strucutural steelwork: beams subject to bending only; columns subject to axial load only; discontinuous single- and double-angle struts subject to axial load only; a chased column subject to axial load only; columns in a simple multi-storey construction; simple tension members; simple connections; a column base plate subject to axial compressive load only; section properties. Part 3 Structural timber: design requirements; a solid rectangular timber section in bending; a solid rectangular timber section in axial compression. Part 4 Reinforced concrete: design requirements; basic prinicples for the design of solid slabs and rectangular beams; simple slab design; simple beam design; basic prinicples for the design of simply supported flanged beams with tension reinforcement only; simple flanged beam design; simply supported hollow block slab design; simple column base design; axially loaded columns. Part 5 Prestressed concrete: design requirements; design of a rectangular simply supported pre-tensioned beam. Part 6 Loadbearing brickwork and blockwork: design requirements; examples of determining the effective thickness of brick and block walls; design of a simple single-leaf wall. Part 7 Retaining walls: pressures on retaining walls due to soil and other granular materials; active pressures on a vertical wall with cohesionless soil backing; passive pressures on a vertical wall with cohesionless soil backing; bearing pressures on foundation soil; design of a gravity wall with cohesionless soil backing and horizontal ground; design of a reinforced concrete cantilever wall with cohesionless soil backing and horizontal ground; factors of safety for retaining walls in cohesionless materials.
