In the 3000 years since King David laid claim to Jerusalem, Jews, Romans, Christians, Persians and Turks have raised their standard above the city's walls. But it was only in 1994, following the historic peace accord between PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, that the Palestinian flag had been seen there. It was greeted with horror by Israelis who, after nearly 2000 years in exile, regard the city as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish people. The author of this text seeks to get to the heart of the Jerusalem dispute through the people who inhabit the city.
