Inspector Hound' is the secret identity of Monsieur Alphonse, the greatest chef in all France, who runs a famous restaurant set in a beautiful hilltop chateau. He is a dog (though no one seems to notice) and all the other characters are human. When one of his guests discovers in the middle of dinner that her pearls are missing, Monsieur Alphonse slips away and reappears as Inspector Hound, who solves the crime. The story is followed by an unusual recipe for children and parents to make at home together. The book stands alone, but is planned as the first in a series. Each story sees Inspector Hound solving a food-related mystery, and is accompanied by a related recipe. (Sequels include Inspector Hound and the Great Noodle Tangle, Inspector Hound and the Nutty Mystery, and Inspector Hound and the Spice Trail.). Über Frances Velody

Born in Durham in 1966 Frances Velody studied Archaeology at Southampton University before starting her long and successful career in the heritage sector, first at the National Trust and then as Policy Director at The Historic Houses Association. Married to Nick and mother of Anastasia and Alexander her passion for beautifully written children's books caused her to write her own stories. Her own name provides a clue but also with many childhood trips to France meant she chose to set her stories in that gastronomically fabulous country. Inspector Hound and the Case of the Enormous Sausage is the first of these; sequels will include Inspector Hound and the Great Noodle Tangle, Inspector Hound and the Nutty Mystery, and Inspector Hound and the Spice Trail. As a mother herself she saw the benefit not only of the book having rich, immersive content but also that ending with a shared cooking activity for parent and child would add a whole extra layer of enduring enjoyment to the books.
