This is a history of the world from the dawn of time up until the Cold War, arranged thematically under subjects such as agriculture, law, industrialization, modern warfare, etc. The first edition won the first National Book Award of the Arts Council in 1980. Hugh Thomas has also written "The Spanish Civil War", the Somerset Maugham Prize winner in 1961, "Cuba or the Pursuit of Freedom" and "Europe: The Radical Challenge".
