Jan Barger was born in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. She came to England to study Calligraphy, but stayed on to study Children's Book Illustration at the Chelsea College of Art. Jan has had a very varied artistic career, encompassing everything from designing wallpaper for Laura Ashley to teaching Calligraphy classes. Jan has worked for many publishing houses including Hodder children's books, Hodder Wayland, Frances Lincoln, Belitha Press, Van der Meer and Lion publishers. She was shortlisted for the Macmillan Prize for a children's picture book in both 1990 and 1991.
