The Art of the Needle: Designing in Fabric and Thread Jan Beaney
With the aid of over 100 specially commissioned photographs and instructions with step-by-step illustrations, Jan Beaney shows how to create designs from many natural and man-made objects including flowers and plants, seashells, stonework and buildings - and describes the shapes, motifs and patterns that can be used. There are ideas on composition and scale and tips on how to interpret texture and colour. She also explains how to transfer designs from paper to fabric and gives helpful hints on successful dyeing and fixing. A variety of techniques, including applique, quilting, stitchery, machine embroidery and patchwork are described and illustrated through sample projects such as cushions, wall hangings, quilts, clothes, jewellery and bags.
