John Tickner's "Horse and Hound" Zusammenfassung

John Tickner's "Horse and Hound" John Tickner

Anyone who has had anything to do with riding, hunting and country pursuits cannot fail to recognise and delight in the situations with a common thread of ever innocent horses, worldly-wise hounds, maniacally mischievous terriers and permanently harassed humans in John Tickner's superbly crafted cartoons. Tickner's outstanding draughtsmanship and powers of observation combined with his deep love and knowledge of country life, produced some of the finest and funniest horse and sporting cartoons ever drawn. This was attested by Tickner's long-standing connection with "Horse & Hound"; one of his cartoons appearing in the publication each week for 20 years. This commemorative book, which covers all aspects of the horseman's year, is one that every horseman and country lover should have on their shelves, not only as an invaluable record of an artist's work but also just for the sheer joy of it.

Über John Tickner

It would be very difficult for an artist, no matter how talented, to develop such wonderful characterisations of both horses and horse people without being directly involved with them but John Tickner undoubtedly knew his subject. Hours spent hunting in Kent as a young man must have given Tickner plenty of cartoon material but he always regretted not being able to ride for often. A writer as well as an artist, John Tickner also edited a Kentish farm and country magazine, and his memoirs "Leopards in the Cellar" recounted his ties with South Africa - in World War II he served with the South African Rifles in Burma. John Tickner (1913-1997) lived in Kent and Dorset but he and his wife Barbara finally settled in Hereford participating in and enjoying country life.
