The defeat of the Jacobites at Culloden forces James McDonald, and his kinsman Douglas, to flee their homeland forever. His reluctant support of the uprising results in James forfeiting his inheritance and the love of the woman he was to marry. James' hazardous journey to America brings him both friends and enemies. Danger is never far away as he tries to rebuild his life in a foreign land. He is compelled to travel westward. James is captured by the Sioux and must fight if he is to survive, and find love, in an alien and brutal world.
