You'll know Goldilocks, Rapunzel, the Three Little Pigs and Puss in Boots. But you might not know amigurumi. It's the Japanese art of crocheting animals and dolls with big, cute, loveable faces. From the frog prince with a forlorn look on his face to the curly-haired princess with her giant pea and the ugly ducking who isn't really very ugly at all, it's harder to turn the pages of this book without sawing 'Awww, adorable!' than it is to eat a doughnut without licking your lips. The patterns assume a certain amount of knowledge, so they're probably best tackled if you have some experience in crochet But they're off-the-scale engaging and gorgeous.

Children love fairy stories - whether it's piles of Ladybird books by the bed or old Disney cartoons on YouTube, young children still delight in tales of the big bad wolf, or scare themselves with stories of Hansel and Gretel lost in the woods. You can bring their stories to life with these adorable amigurumi patterns by Inside Crochet designer Lynne Rowe (www.thewoolnest.blogspot.co.uk). Made using a selection of DMC natural fibre yarns, any of these story-themed toys would make a great treat for a child. Designs range from Goldilocks and the three bears to a dashing Puss in boots, Rapunzel and her tower, oh-so-cute ugly ducklings and our favourite, a sweet princess complete with a mattress, blankets and tiny pea! There are 11 fairytale sets in total, enough to fill a whole chest of storytime toys. We particularly like all the little design details, such as Goldilocks'

curly blonde hair, and Snow White's tiny red apple. This book assumes experience with the basic crochet stitches, but includes clear photo guides to amigurumi techniques such as attaching parts together, stuffing evenly, adding safety eyes and creating different hairstyles. Amigurumi

are quick to hook and perfect for using up odds and ends of yarn, so set aside a few hours and fall in love with fairytales again.

Once Upon A Time in Crochet is an adorable collection of crochet amigurumi projects from those timeless fairytales that we all know and love. I had initially been eyeing up this book because I'd always said that when I have kids I would want a fairytale themed nursery (although I' not going to need that for about a decade I'm hoping!) As a literature lover all things that amalgamate my two loves, reading and crafts, always peaks my interest and this one certainly didn't disappoint! The moment I first picked it up and started flicking through it made me want to pick up my hook and get started! As you can see from the contents page, characters from 11 classic fairytales are represented in the book. This range not only includes the main character of the story, but often their friends, foes and additional props that makes this one jam-packed book! Overall it covers instructions for thirty characters and many more extras which makes it exceptional value for money. This book is a delight with all the familiar fairy-tale characters translated into cute crochet amigurumi figures. They include the princess and the pea, complete with a stack of tiny blankets, and of course, a pea; Rapunzel letting down her long hair from a crocheted castle; and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves - that's a lot of dwarves to crochet but they are basically a simple ball with a pointy hat. I'm sure crocheting grannies would enjoy making these.

English crochet terms are used. The patterns are worked in 4-ply cotton or merino DK. The figures range in height from about 5 to 10.

Lynne Rowe is an experienced crochet designer who explains things in a clear understandable style. She provides a very useful introductory section, explaining amongst other things how to stitch heads and bodies together, make moving arms and legs, use mattress stitch, make small pom-poms with a fork, attach hair with a crochet hook. Rightly, as these are toys for small children, Lynne puts great stress on safety aspects and explains in detail how to attach safety eyes.

If you like working with amigurumi this is good escapism for these times.
