In three decades as a photographer for Smithsonian Magazine, Michael Freeman has been asked to shoot some of the world's most picturesque locales. But they are also some of the world's most photographed, which presents a challenge. When photographers have had nearly 100 years to perfect the shot of, say, the Taj Mahal, how do you improve on shots so classic they have become cliche? This should be a matter of concern to any summer traveler who would like to come home with more than a picture of the family standing in front of famous landmarks. Mr. Freeman offers five tips on avoiding the photographic cliche.--NYTimes.com

They're genuine paperbacks that I can thumb through and dog-ear, not download fodder for my Kindle or iPad. And they're compact enough to fit into the pocket of my Levi's or the outside compartment of my camera bag.In an age that seems overrun with gear freaks and technophiles, these little Field Guides are indispensable new pieces of equipment in charmingly old-fashioned packages. Stick one in the pocket of your Levi's.--Rangefinder
