Masterpieces of the Met P. de Montebello
This volume provides a view of the treasures contained within New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art. The reader can explore Ancient Egypt through the half-acre Temple of Dendur and a diminutive cat coffin, tour the Greek and Roman galleries and see the famous Euphronios Krater and, in the wing devoted to Africa, Oceania and the Americas view two masks - one carved in ivory from Benin and the other in jade from Olmec. In the European and American painting collections, the highlights include Botticelli's Annunciation, Rembrandt's Aristotle with a bust of Homer and Manet's Boating. The 20th century is also well represented, with works by Picasso, Matisse, Hopper and many others. Drawings, prints, photographs and other works of the decorative arts - as well as examples of haute couture from the Costume Institute - round out the book, providing an overall picture of this world-famous art museum.
