This is a how to primer for nurses and health professionals that provides, simply and clearly, the knowledge and skills they need to effectively use interactive social media when educating consumers/patients on health issues and for their own professional development. The book also includes educational content such as guidelines describing how to use Social Network Tools/Social Network Sites (SNT/SNS) safely and effectively, as well as other resources available to support health professionals and consumers/patients in using SNT/SNS resources for health-related goals.

Included as well are examples of research studies related to SNT/SNS in healthcare. The text uses a conceptual approach to teaching the material that reinforces the main points of each chapter, and includes chapter activities and exercises to promote point-of-care applications of SNT/SNS. Near future advances in technology and point of care use are woven throughout. The text will be of value for all nurse education and practice settings.

Über Ramona Nelson

Ramona Nelson, PhD, BC-RN, FAAN, ANEF, is president of her own informatic consulting company. Her consulting work has focused on the integration of informatics in healthcare education and the use of internet based technology in the education process. Prior to that Dr. Nelson was Professor of Nursing and Chair of the Department of Nursing, Slippery Rock University, PA. Dr. Nelson currently serves as Chair of the NLN Educational Technology and Information Management Advisory Council and is a member of the ANA Committee on Nursing Practice Information Infrastructure. In 2008, because of her pioneering work in informatics, she was invited to participate as a member of the task force charged with revising the Scope and Standards of Nursing Informatics, which was published that year by ANA. Her past publications include textbooks, monographs, book chapters, journal articles, WWW publications, abstracts and newsletters. She is author of the 5th edition of Introduction to Computers for Health Professions (2005) and Healthcare Informatics: An Interdisciplianry Approach (2002). Dr. Nelson is an active member of professional organizations including NLN, ANA, HIMSS, ANIA-Caring.

Irene Joos, RN, PhD, is Associate Professor in the IST Department as well the Director of Online Learning at La Roche College, Pittsburgh, with a previous post as Director of Library and Instructional Technologies. Dr. Joos received a doctorate in Education and a master's in Medical-Surgical Nursing and Information Science from the University of Pittsburgh. She has taught, and teaches, Office Automation, Management of Information Systems, Cyberspace, Computer Based Training, Virtual Communities and Social Media to all La Roche College students, and Nursing Informatics courses to undergraduate and graduate nursing students in on campus and online formats. She has also taught medical-surgical nursing, foundations, basic nursing concepts and theories, professional nursing role, and nursing informatics courses in diploma, baccalaureate, and masters programs. Dr. Joos currently supports online students and faculty and conducts training sessions for faculty in online teaching and using Blackboard. She focuses on the use of technology to help nurses work efficiently and effectively. Dr. Joos has previously published with Dr. Nelson, Introduction to Computers for Health Professions (2010). Her past publications also include a textbook, book chapter, and journal/newsletter articles.

Debra M. Wolf, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN is Associate Professor of Nursing, Chatham University, PA, where she teaches at the DNP and graduate levels in courses specific to EBP and informatics. She is also an independent Healthcare Informatics Consultant, most recent working with Thomas Edison State College, developing curricular content for their new Masters in Nursing Informatics program. At Slippery Rock University she oversaw the Informatics curricular content in the RN to BSN program. At Robert Morris University, she taught in the DNP program as adjunct faculty. With her 30+ years within the health care arena, she has focused on integrating technology into health care settings, change management, and process redesign, working closely with various IT vendors and health systems in exploring and integrating new technologies. She was invited to testify at the IOM on the future needs of nursing where she emphasized the need for innovative technology to be integrated into all nursing programs. In addition she has served on the NLN: Education Technology Information Management Advisory Committee and the Western Pennsylvania HIMSS Chapter Board of Directors. Dr. Wolf has published widely in the literature and is a member of multiple organizations including HIMSS, NLN, ANA, and Sigma Theta Tau
