Too many calves die young or fail to thrive causing enormous financial loss and suffering. However, good calf performance and health can be achieved within a wide range of rearing systems if the stockmanship is good. The last few years have seen many improvements in our understanding of the scientific basis of calf rearing. In many cases, these have reinforced traditional concepts of good calf husbandry. In other cases, traditional good husbandry has been shown to be positively dangerous. This book explains the scientific basis of calf rearing and its implications for the productivity, health and welfare of the animals in sufficient detail and in a form suitable for both students and stockmen.
