The Caine Prize for African Writing is Africa's leading literary prize, and is awarded to a work (a short story) by an African writer published in English, whether in Africa or elsewhere. Each year the winning story and shortlisted entries are collected and published in one volume. "Monday Morning" by the Nigerian writer Segun Afolabi is the winning story of the 6th Caine Prize for African Writing. This anthology collects the winner and the shortlisted stories, together with the stories written at the Celtel Caine Prize Writers Workshop near Naivasha, Kenya in 2006. The shortlisted authors are: Doreen Baingana of Uganda for "Tropical Fish", Jamal Mahjoub of Sudan for "The Obituary Tango" (the story that gives this year's collection its title), Muthal Naidoo of South Africa for "Jail Birds" and Ike Okonta of Nigeria for "Tindi in the Land of the Dead". The Caine Prize is a springboard for some of the best talent in African writing. Previous winners include Leila Aboulela, who has just published her second novel with Bloomsbury, and Helon Habila, who has also just published his second novel with Hamish Hamilton.
