Basil Hume, Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, was an outstanding and much-loved religious leader. His death at the age of 76 saddened not only the Catholic Church but the whole Christian community. Although first and foremost a Roman Catholic , and a Benedictine monk, who never compromised the reality of his own faith, his obvious authority and holiness was felt and acknowledged generally.
