Hans Christian Andersen: The Fan Dancer Alison Prince

Using diaries and letters, the author of this study claims that Andersen was a suppressed homosexual whose highly publicised affairs with prominent women were used to build his public persona and to protect his private self. An interview with a member of the Danish nobility also reveals that he was possibly the illegitimate son of Crown Prince Christian Frederick, later King Christian VIII of Denmark.
