Since the explosion in microprocessor-based products in the 1980s, mechanical engineers can no longer restrict their interest purely to the mechanical aspects of design. This book introduces the basic principles of electrical technology, before moving on to cover such topics as instrumentation sensors and measurement; electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems; microprocessor technology; interfacing principles; high- and low-level programming; continuous and discrete fundamentals; and system modelling. Coverage encompasses a multidisciplinary range of subject material normally associated with the general philosophy of mechatronics. Later chapters present the integration of electronics and computer technology through the control of mechanical systems and processes. Finally, an entire chapter is devoted to detailed descriptions of working solutions to practical engineering problems. These should instil a basic level of confidence in the reader, allowing her/him to apply new technological principles to the development of solutions for their own requirements.
